Brief History of Thailand

Thailand is packed with interesting history which is why a lot of tourists around the world make it as their favorite vacation spot. Thailand was formerly known as “Siam” and it has been ruled by several Kingdoms, like the Mon, Khmer, as well as Malay. Soon, the Thais were able to establish their own states, which are the Chiang Mai, Lanna Kingdom, Sukhothai, Chiang Saen, and Kingdom of Ayutthaya. These states have faced constant conflicts and struggles with the Indian Kingdoms.

It was not until 1949 when the Siam has been changed to “Thailand” which means “Land of free”.  It’s the only country in Southeast Asia who is able to successfully resist colonial rules. However, there have been subtle problems within the country during those times especially that they use the strict military rule. Finally, by 1980s, Thailand has adopted the democratic way of governing.

The Origin of Thais

The first settlers in Thailand originated from the Southern China recorded 4,500 years ago, when they moved from there to the Thailand Province and established the first Kingdom which is the “Sukothai”. By then, they were called Thais and began to scatter around the country. It is believed that these people are more of Austronesia descent rather than Mongoloid (of China).

Kingdoms in Thailand

The first Kingdom, which is the Sukhothai is the era where Thailand has developed their unique culture. It is considered the golden age in Thailand since during these days, Thailand faced great prosperity and abundance like food (water, rice and fish). After the Sukhothai era is the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which has struggled much on resisting the invasion of Burma.

Modern Thailand

After experiencing several ups and lows from taking part in World War I and II, Thailand has been governed by various government systems like Monarchy. Right now, Thailand has become a highly industrialized country with a sudden spurt of economic growth, after it has suffered a crisis in the year 1998. With their right preservation of their natural resources, as well as ancient culture landmarks, their country have gained a lot of positive impressions and it became a well-known spot for tourists. The capital city Bangkok is one of the most desired tourist place in Asia.
